An automatic recirculation valve, sometimes called a pump protection valve or minimum flow valve, is installed on the outlet of the centrifugal pump discharge line. Its purpose is to prevent the pump from overheating by ensuring that there is always a minimum flow through the pump. They have replaced traditional multi-valve pump protection solutions. The XURI minimum flow recirculation valve combines three important functions of a pump protection system:
No-return feature in the main line to prevent the medium from flowing backwards to the pump
Automatic bypass control ensures minimum flow is allowed back to the pump during periods of low demand
Pressure relief feature ensures that the recirculating medium remains at the correct pressure to avoid flashing and cavitation
Once the pump produces sufficient flow, the minimum flow valve opens, moving the internal valve disc in the main line to the open position. The reduction in flow causes the spring-loaded disc to return to its seat, closing the process outlet. At the same time, the bypass outlet is uncovered, allowing a minimum flow of liquid to be routed (or recirculated) back to the pump.
The automatic recirculation valve is a multifunctional valve. The minimum flow recirculation valve ensures that a predetermined minimum flow is always delivered through the centrifugal pump. So the automatic recirculation valve is basically a pump protection device. These valves perform a very important function in order to avoid permanent damage from cavitation and overheating.
