What are the types of check valve?

1. Swing Check Valve:

One of the most common types of check valves is the swing check valve. It consists of a disc or a flap hinged at the top, allowing it to swing freely. When the flow of fluid is in the desired direction, the disc opens, allowing the fluid to pass through. However, when there is a reverse flow or backflow, the disc swings back to its closed position, preventing the fluid from flowing backward.

Swing check valves are suitable for applications where flow reversal is not frequent. They are commonly used in low-pressure systems or where minimal pressure drop is acceptable.

2. Lift Check Valve:

A lift check valve operates through a guided disc that moves in a vertical direction. The disc is connected to a spring, which keeps it closed when there is no flow. As fluid enters the valve, the pressure lifts the disc, allowing the flow. However, when the flow reverses, the disc is forced back onto the seat, preventing the backflow.

Lift check valves are ideal for high-pressure applications as they provide a tight seal when closed. They are commonly used in applications involving steam, gas, or liquid.

3. Ball Check Valve:

Ball check valves have a spherical disc inside a pipe fitting. The disc, which is made of metal or synthetic material, is designed to float freely. In the absence of flow, the weight of the disc and gravity force it to seal the valve, preventing backflow. When there is forward flow, the pressure of the fluid pushes the disc aside, allowing the flow to pass through.

Ball check valves are commonly used in industries where quick response times are required, such as in fuel systems, air compressors, and pumping systems.

4. Dual Plate Check Valve:

A dual plate check valve consists of two hinged plates or discs that open and close in response to fluid flow. When the fluid flows in the desired direction, the plates rotate to open, allowing the flow through. Once the fluid flow stops or reverses, the plates close under the action of springs, preventing backflow.

Dual plate check valves are known for their compact design and low-pressure drop. They are widely used in applications where space is limited, such as in HVAC systems and water treatment plants.

5. Stop Check Valve:

A stop check valve combines the functions of a lift check valve and a globe valve. It has a disc connected to a stem that allows it to move up and down. When the fluid flow is in the desired direction, the disc behaves like a lift check valve, moving up to allow the flow. However, when there is a backflow or the system needs to be shut off entirely, the valve can be closed using the stem, like a globe valve.

Stop check valves are commonly used in applications requiring occasional flow reversal along with the ability to shut off the flow completely.

6. Diaphragm Check Valve:

A diaphragm check valve utilizes a flexible diaphragm as the closure member. The diaphragm is connected to a seat by a hinge mechanism. When the flow is in the desired direction, the diaphragm flexes and allows the fluid to pass through. On the other hand, when the flow tries to reverse, the diaphragm straightens out, forming a seal against the seat and preventing backflow.

Diaphragm check valves are suitable for applications with low-pressure drops and are commonly used in pharmaceutical, food processing, and chemical industries.
